The rehabilitation of the former La Calandria Church, located in the historic setting of La Granja de San Ildefonso, aimed to achieve the structural and artistic recovery of a highly valuable heritage building that had fallen into an advanced state of deterioration. The intervention focused particularly on the consolidation of the roof structure and the polychrome timber framework, which exhibited significant damage due to moisture, deformation, and the loss of decorative layers. Specialized techniques were employed for structural restoration and wood conservation, including preventive and curative treatments, volumetric reintegration, and localized consolidation of traditional joints, all while respecting the original materials and construction methods.
In parallel, the project undertook the restoration of the interior wall paintings, which had been affected by water infiltration, dirt deposits, and chromatic alteration. The work included physical and chemical cleaning, fixing of paint layers, differentiated chromatic reintegration, and final surface protection. The overall intervention restored the spatial, structural, and decorative integrity of the building, which is now adapted for civil use. The restoration followed principles of minimal intervention, reversibility, and material compatibility, and was carried out by multidisciplinary teams specialized in the conservation of historic heritage.
