As part of the conservation initiatives for fortified heritage in southern Albania, a joint venture was established with Cultural Heritage without Borders (CHwB) for the development of technical studies, restoration design, and supervision of restoration works at the castles of Kanina and Borsh —two sites of exceptional historical and landscape value. The interventions focused on the structural consolidation of towers, curtain walls, and entrance gates, as well as the selective reconstruction of masonry using traditional techniques and compatible materials. The works also included pathology analyses, detailed architectural surveys, and proposals to improve circulation routes, accessibility, and signage, with a view to enhancing their future use as publicly accessible heritage sites.
Both projects were developed under a multidisciplinary and international framework, combining archaeological conservation criteria with principles of sustainability, community engagement, and responsible cultural tourism.
